Speaker:

Dr. Jose L. Fernandez-Solis

Associate Professor

Texas A & M University

Abstract:

Building Construction is a Value + Embedded Waste proposition.  Explore three types of waste: Systemic, Synergistic and Discrete by stakeholders organization showcasing a fractal structure of Strategic, Logistic and Tactical dimensions across design and construction phases with gaps in information transfer.  Project flow captured in cost and schedule translate into application for payments and Percent Plan Complete.

Date and Time:

Wednesday, December 7, 2011,  1:30-4:30pm

Speaker Bios:

Dr. Fernández-Solís joined the Department of Construction Science at Texas A&M University as an Assistant Professor in August, 2006.  Dr. Fernández-Solís proficiency is in lean production theories and practices, sustainability, theories of chaos, and integrated processes.  Professional experience influences his research and teaching, which feed back into the industry.  Dr. Fernández-Solís is in the Aggie Honor Council, the Executive Committee for the COSC department and is Faculty Senator for the College of Architecture at Texas A&M University.

LCI Houston Community of Practice

The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.

The Houston Community of Practice (CoP) of LCI has been developed to provide local lean support to owners, architects and designers, engineers, contractors, specialty contractors and suppliers who are doing business in the Houston area.  We invite owners and project delivery team members to meet together as a local user group to learn, share and develop a lean community in the Houston area.

We are dedicated to exploring the three opportunities provided by Lean Project Delivery (LPD):

-Impeccable coordination to create predictable work flow

-Projects as a production system to change the structure of work in design and construction.

-Project as a collective enterprise to align financial incentives.
